| German sculptor Jan Scharrelmann, born in 1975, lives and works in Cologne and Düsseldorf. As a graduate of the Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf Schools of Art his concept is based on the unusual synthesis of the materials he uses. He often combines styrofoam and fibreglass with a thick layering of coloured and hardened epoxy. His works appear as a cross-over of painting, sculpture and architecture – as with his work “Daphnis & Chloe”. There are many associations triggered by the mirror finish of these sculptures, but the most striking is surely mythology as it refers to the Longus’ novel of the same title. “The shepherds drove their flocks into the fields, Daphnis and Chloe first of all, since they served a mightier shepherd. They first ran to the nymphs and the grotto, then to the image of Pan and the pine tree under which they sat down watching their flocks and kissing each other.” artwork „Daphnis & Chloe“, 2008 2 pieces, each 280 x 160 x 80 cm pigments, epoxy resin, fibre glass Courtesy Galerie Hammelehle & Ahrens, Cologne contact Galerie Hammelehle und Ahrens, Cologne www.haah.de |
